Birmingham Airport Authority Board approves renaming

BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA – Birmingham Airport Authority board of directors approved the renaming of the airport in honor of civil rights activist, Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth.

On July 16, the Airport Authority Board of Directors in a called meeting unanimously voted to change the airport's name from "Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport" to "Birmingham Shuttlesworth International Airport". The vote came after a resolution was passed and endorsed by the mayor and Birmingham City Council on June 24, 2008.

"Passengers will not see immediate changes," said, Al Denson, President/CEO, Birmingham Airport Authority, "It will take several months, there are formalities which we must address before making those changes."
