Runway and Tower Information

BAA is a category 5 airport served by two runways capable of accommodating most modern air carrier, cargo transport, general aviation and military aircraft operating within the United States, Canada and South America. Birmingham International Airport's longest runway, runway 6/24 currently stretches to 10,000 feet with a $43 million, 2, 000 foot expansion currently underway. The completed 12,000 foot runway, and adjacent taxiways, is on schedule to open at the end of 2006.

Presently, runway 18/36 is temporarily closed to allow for the construction of runway and taxiway extensions. Weekly construction updates, alternative taxi routes (PDF) and any NOTAM related to construction are listed below. Runway 18/36 is expected to re-open on Monday December 5, 2005 – Closure Extended.
